Renowned food safety litigator to discuss public health and the role of “agribusiness” in modern food safety, April 21, 2015

Are you concerned about the safety of your food and drinking water? Litigator Bruce Clark will discuss these and other issues impacting modern food safety in a lecture on Tuesday April 21, 5:30pm, in Taylor Hall, room 203. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Clark is the co-principal attorney in the Marler Clark Food Safety Law Firm in Seattle, Washington. In 1993, Clark pursued litigation on behalf of victims of the major E. coli food contamination event linked to a Seattle Jack in the Box restaurant, an outbreak that sickened over 700 people and resulted in the deaths of several children and the permanent injury of many more. This ground-breaking litigation ultimately led to new federal food safety laws, a zero-tolerance policy for E.coli contamination in consumable meat, voluntary reform within the fast food industry, and a heightened public awareness of the many potential dangers lurking in our food.

Since that time, Clark has continuously represented victims of food and waterborne illness and litigated cases involving bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents in settings ranging from large scale outbreaks to individual cases. Marler Clark has litigated against multi-national corporations such as Cargill, Dole, Wal-Mart, Wendy’s, McDonalds, and Nestle. The firm has won over $600 million in total settlements for their clients.

Clark has extensive expertise in the medical, microbiological, and epidemiological aspects of foodborne illness cases, gleaned from more than a decade of working with leading experts across the country. He frequently speaks to public health groups as well as food industry groups about the realities of foodborne illness litigation and efforts that can help avoid the damage foodborne pathogens inflict.
